Part 1 -from Albufeira to Amarcao de Pera - this area has relatively low cliffs, which makes for easy access, but still has the typical honey coloured rocks fashioned by the sea and the wind into weird dramatic shapes, caves and arches. When we visited in 2003 we found that all the beach cafes and restaurants.had been rebuilt, included first class toilets and showers for use of the general public, and that the access to the beaches had been improved. We suspect that this was an EU funded programme, but it certainly is impressive.
Sao Raphael : the most easterly of our selection and just a few kms from Albufeira
This is really a collection of beaches - the main beach is a large Blue Flag beach -very scenic with an
excellent restaurant as well as a cafe/beach bar.

Praia do Castelo A km or so further on from Sao Raphael is this super little beach, called after the ruined castle on the headland - now incorporated into a restaurant.
. There are easy cliff walks from here to Coelha to the east and Evista to the west.

Praia do Gale.
Gale beach is a long sandy stretch backed by sandhills and almost reaching Amarcao de Pera. We find this relatively uninteresting by Algarve standards and much prefer the small coves to the east of Gale beach. These stretch right until Evista and Castelo. An easy and very picturesque cliff walk is from here to Castelo and even as far as Coelha.. Please click here for more pictures

All the beaches featured here are easily accessible and have beach bars/cafes and good toilet facilities.
There are still remote beaches, reached by a climb or by sea, but we leave these for the intrepid to discover.
